In addition to the direct instruction below, students spend 2-4 sessions a week on the reading software Read180, as well as independent and partner reading 2-4 sessions per week.
Sixth Grade Students 1 hour class: We started a unit about natural disasters. Our comprehension focus is sequencing events.
Vocabulary: recovery, severe, prevent, destruction, major
Sixth Grade Students 30 minute class: We are learning to use vocabulary in context using the following vocabulary words: percent, minimum, influenced, motivate, policy, currently, income, communicate, immigrant, and trend.
7th Grade Students 1 hour class: We have started a unit about Self-Esteem. Our comprehension focus is to identify problems and solutions in text. Vocabulary: pressure, negative, authority, confidence, convince
7th Grade Students 30 minute class: Finishing a unit called "Stolen Childhoods". Our comprehension focus is to summarize by using the topic and three details. Our critical reading focus is: analyze and synthesize.
Vocabulary: labor, international, produce, benefit, economy
8th Grade Students 1 hour class: We have started an unit called "Turning Points". Our comprehension focus will be Compare and Contrast. Our critical reading focus will be: analyze, synthesize, and evaluate.
Vocabulary: positive, involved, dramatic, attitude, persist.
8th Grade Students 30 minute class: We are learning elements of an argument essay. Students will also write an argument essay after Christmas break.
