Frequently Asked Questions

I just started playing golf.  Should I tryout?

The great thing about golf (unlike some other sports) is that most Middle School players have not played on previous teams.  SMS Golf is a great place to grow in your experience and have the opportunity to play with others.   If you make the team, even if you don’t get to play in a regular season match, you will get to see what SMS Golf is like, practice with the team, play in the tournaments, and experience Cedar Crest Golf Course for the season.  All this will give you experience for the next season. Even if you don't make the team, you will still get the experience of seeing what tryouts are like and be even better prepared for next year.

What can I do to get ready for tryouts?

To get ready for tryouts, spend as much time as you can at the driving range working through each club in your bag.  Driving is nice, but make sure you don't neglect your wedge and putter.

What is a match like?

Players will play 9 holes of stroke play against one or two other schools.  A triple bogey maximum score (3 shots over par) will be in effect for each hole.  The team with the lowest number of combined strokes will be the winner.

What do the team members do who aren't playing in a match?

For most of our matches, there is room after the players have teed off for them to play for practice.  Team members who are not playing in a match are expected to attend in order to see what match play is like and to get in the practice. (After all, who wouldn't want to play golf as often as they could?)  On occasion, there may be too many teams playing for there to be room to allow non-players to play.  When this is the case, team members will be informed and will not be required to attend.

What does the team fee cover?

The team fee covers TMSGA Team Membership, away course game fees (when playing away matches) and a Team Shirt.
