Weekly Updates- 2/26

Happy Sunday Smyrna Middle Parents and Students,

Here is a bit of information for the week.

  • We begin benchmark testing this Thursday. This test is given in all Rutherford County schools and is used as a predictive test for TCAP. Parents can assist with the testing process by making sure students get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and are present in school for the next two weeks.
  • Parents, we also need your help with getting your students to school on time. Absences and tardies to school are increasing. This is an issue as students are not learning when they are not present, and the federal government tracks each school’s attendance annually. A portion of a school’s performance is based on student attendance. We need parents to help SMS and the community of Smyrna by sending your students to school and on time. We want the best for Smyrna Middle School, and we know you do as well!
  • Question: When’s the last time you checked your kiddo’s phone or social media? If you are noticing a change in your student’s behavior, taking a look at who they are talking to and what they are discussing is vital in helping you to have conversations with your child. At school, we are seeing an increase in conflict beginning with or relating to social media.
  • Smyrna High is scheduled to host 8th grade night on March 7th starting at 6:00. Parents/students are encouraged to attend. On that night, SHS will present information regarding 9th grade scheduling, graduation requirements, extracurriculars, sports, and academic opportunities at Smyrna High. Students who attend this night will receive their class selection/registration materials for 9th grade as well as specific instructions on how to fill out that paperwork prior to counselors coming to the middle school for registration.
  • Join us for Reading over Cinnamon Rolls on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 8:30-9:30 a.m.  Parents will learn how to use reading cards to not only support fluent reading but also practice comprehension. In addition to the cards, parents will learn how to play Bananagrams to practice spelling and vocabulary.
  • Parents, we are excited to share that our Science Olympiad team is state-bound! They placed in 10 events this weekend at regionals. We couldn’t be more proud and can’t wait to see how this team grows over the next month before heading to Knoxville, TN for state championships. Let’s Go Panthers!!
  • We are further excited to announce that we have 3 students heading to the state competition for the Regional National History Day competition! These kiddos are doing great things!
  • Get your yearbook before they sell out! Yearbooks start at $35 and will be on sale online through February 28th or while supplies last. Purchase a yearbook here
