ruler with centimeters on it so the difference is these are centimeters he's our inches we want to use the centimeter side and then we want some sort of colored pencils or markers add Sharpies probably not want to use Sharpies the best ones are going to be like these erasable colored pencils just because Hayden get rid of it you need some sort of cup of water make sure your laptop before you start this picture laptop up on something so that it's not by the water answer your phone has technology rules so maybe elevate your laptop up on some books or a counter and then maybe do this on a separate table or something like that this should be zoomed if you are I'm in my class and so hopefully may not even need this video but if you need to go back and look at it. I miss Mitchell and we're going to walk you through does M&M lab that we're hoping is going so well at your house today so the first thing is hopefully you took your notes on the scientific method and did your scientific method assignment so now you're going to look at the document and and to turnitin you can even print it and write on it and then take a picture and upload that or you can just write it on a sheet of paper same thing take picture up like that alright some scientific method is a way to think about problems and solve them they don't always follow the steps of scientific method in order but today we are going to probably pretty much going over thanks so we have a problem we want to know which candy is going to dissolve the fat cyst in water how far is it going to travel okay not really helped me some fast-food how far is it to travel don't eat your experiment and don't eat it all the water let's go sell your project today and then make the garage all right you are going to need some place the lighter the colors of better cars are white color travel and you're also going to need some sort of code of candy we have Skittle Eminem's were Tic Tacs work all sorts of things like that work you're also going to need a ruler and you're going to need complain one cup of water and if you can't do this if you don't have the key that's fine you can just watch the video so pretty much you need a different color I forgot to play. I'm going to put that green one and one play and I like red red wine and you can take three colors or you can do all of the color completely up to you check the water and be gentle you don't want us to Birds the skittle completely but you do want it to be halfway underwater and then you're going to start time 30 seconds I started move off of the skittle so that's about and then hear a measuring from the drinks in the middle part so in your chart I just put all the colors and you can just record whatever colors you have how far it is gone so you wait another 30 seconds so it's going to be every 30 seconds you're going to measure Kerr so it's been probably another 30 seconds and now are red has gone 3 cm and are green at the farthest point is going about 3 or say 3.4 centimeters is okay if it's not exact try to do the best you can it's practice okay and then we wait another 30 seconds and so on and so forth so just keep measuring every 30 seconds until you get to about 4 and 1/2 minutes so once your chart is full so once this is. And we're going to analyze that data and to a crab make sure you make a chart title what your chart title should not say MyChart shouldn't say anything about what's the other one your name so it shouldn't say mrs. race chart you need to describe what this is a okay so to make your grass you're going to need to put your variables on there so do you want to talk about independent variables independent variables you remember from your notes or that it is the one thing that changes the one thing that changes in an experiment so the one thing we changed here color the one thing we changed it with color and what we measured was a distance that the color travel in the water along the vertical axis you're going to want a hat of I'm obviously not Bill Nye some of these green let's go to place that right in the middle of the and also need a timer make sure you have a time maybe your cell phone or even a timer on the stove I would work so any timer or you can count on your head if you have to all right so what we're going to do is run a take this candy and you can go ahead and set up all three of your candies at with lunch if you want or you can do them one at a time and go ahead and put also a yellow let's go ahead and do it or as well and I'm going to pour the water if you want the water to be deep enough that you cover a lot of candy but not so deep that is and I'm actually I need a little more water here I'll be right by a single and then this water play room temperature there we go and I'll stop so we're going to measure in centimeters every 30 how far the color travels are Skittles or M&M's go ahead and matter from the middle of the candy I'm still about 30 seconds I'm going to measure the green you want to measure the green it strapped to that out almost exactly two centimeters the yellow is about 1.5 cm any Orange is Warrenton .7 so we want to count again time every 30 seconds k all right so it's time to go ahead and measure the green again The Green Mile traveled 3 cm the yellow at its 4 point has traveled about 2.8 an orange has traveled about 2.8 as well I can see the colors truck traveling it's time to measure again and we're going to get four for the green green likes to be very exact yellow is at 3.4 and the orange is at about 4 now so the Orange is going well faster spell what you can do if you just want to do something kind of pretty take one point and put several Skittles around the edges you can make a pattern South show you how that works just for fun I'm the measure again same for the skittle the green one we've got four point 4.8 snowing down some yellow you've got 4.5 and for the orange you got about 5 actually over taking the green so like I said you can make a pattern with the Skittles this kind of popular online what people say it so you can move your Skittles around the plate song and get a Saturn what colors you like so just put them around your plate all around the edges and I'm going to pour some water in there on the measuring can can't wait for your order so the green has traveled that's centimeters now the yellow has travelled 4.0 4.8 orange is at 5 what's 7 men's that's my set up for just for fun can add a little more water staff Okay so two more seconds I know we're going to come measure again all right for the green I have 6.7 or the yellow about 6 poo point does Orange is really moving over here that's about seven and a half what's happening over here so again we're going to I'm going to try zoom zoom call you have this video to look at I'm or if you need to go back later and look at k can I look at that alright this is actually made it to the side of the plate go to the green side of the plate is eight and a half and then for the yellow it also made it two-sided light for the yellows not quite in the middle yellows actually traveled nonsense now in an orange same thing orange is reach the side of the plate and so we are at all so 9. They're all since I've reached their sides are there look what's going on they look so cool I do not recommend eating these Skittles letter in the water ever if you have someone that's totally up to you if you have braces you know better so what do you think Skittles or M&M's I think I kind of like the Skittles better I don't know like almond Eminem's but I don't like peanut M&M's brightness Lego so we're actually putting timing minutes at the bottom okay cuz that's what was on charge so number it like that 2 * 12.5 all the way up 4.5 which is a minute I would always depend on how far this is going pretty far now after several minutes is all the way to the edge of the court so if it's gone say 6 a.m. need to think about what don't want my scale to be you don't want to cry. so what's up with that agreement says like it's about seven and a half so if we forgot to go to 8 okay for good measure I would just probably play do you got plenty of room I think I'ma start but if I can't AR-15 11.5 to two-and-a-half 3 and 1/2 4 and then 5 6 7 8 I got plenty of room so again always coming out first cuz otherwise you'll end up like me and messing up your graph which I did a lot when I was a kid cuz I wouldn't count it out first cuz I was impatient so hopefully you see the decimal points are now this graph and involves time love distance for actually I make a line graph that make different lines for different colors so we had red and green M&M can't the first measurement I think we had was about 30 seconds and it was what about 2 I think so. right there on our grass where to centimeters and half a minute 30 seconds person right there and then the second time we measure. We went to what three or was it 3.5 and then we've ended up at 7 what's a seven and a half seven and a half K so we're going to pretend our other numbers here that's not helpful once you get all your points plotted we are earlier if you need to so you should end up with the line representing whatever your green Skittle or Eminem did or whichever color you decided to use queso again we're looking for at least three lines if you just want to be a listen to all of them you are certainly welcome to read was actually in the same spot starting out which was at 2K and then it was a little less at 1 and where did it end up make sure you're actually finished or just kind of giving you a demonstration and so this is going to represent my pink or red schedule k do you want to do that for all three or four or however many you do and you can always jump your play doubt they'll jump at the candy and the same catalog the same dump it out wash it out and then do another one all right why so you have some questions to answer on the back so the first thing is you have to form a conclusion you're going to State whether or not you're all your hypothesis was correct which is just going to be supported if you thought the red was going to be first then then you're going to say your hypothesis was correct he thought the ride was coming first thing you're going to say your hypothesis okay you want to add some other questions on what was your problem and our problem here was just that we wanted to see how far the different colors of the candy and Anna Play-Doh water okay and then also in this experiment what was the independent variable I told you that just a few seconds ago the independent variable was the one thing that we changed in the one thing that we changed what the color of the candy so also in this experiment what was the dependent variable what did we measure we measured the link that the color and then I'll have to question say what were some sort what were some of your constraints in this experiment or what have you kept constant so we did about the same amount of water we did the same size plate we did one candy instead of two or three or four we measured in centimeters the whole time we kept everything else constant except for the color of the candies in other words did you make any mistakes this is not a gotcha this is not a place where you going to lose points or anyting it's just a place for you to say oh I can someone tell because that can needs to be fixed and your next round of experiment right and it's sometimes the mistakes actually lead to new discoveries so the big one the big famous one and science as far as mistakes go is Alexander Fleming penicillin Alexander Fleming was growing bacteria and what's all the petri dish which is sort of like a little fight and his bacterial colonies ended up getting contaminated by mold penicillium and when he looked at it cuz he wasn't just like the has to say oh well these are messed up off of the way he looked at why why are these not growing bacteria but they're growing old and it turned out the mold actually secreted a poison that killed the bacteria and so he actually that mistake was kind of a lucky one for us a medicine that can kill things like strip so that's good invented accidentally and I got one. actually I think there was several years in between discovering it and actually having to use for it so I eventually made it
